What's the difference between glass slides and cover slips?

A cover slip is a very thin flat piece of transparent glass or plastic material that is placed over the specimen. When observing liquid preparations, the cover slip creates a stable surface for microscope to focus on. A slide glass is a flat glass or plastic rectangular plate that the specimen is placed on. Glass slide with cavity are especially designed for observing liquid samples.
